Advancing Clinical Excellence Through Training, Research, and Military-Centered HIV/AIDS Care
The Clinical Training and Research Centre (CTRC), Kaduna, is a flagship capacity-building and clinical care institution of the Ministry of Defence Health Implementation Programme (MODHIP). Located within the prestigious 44 Nigerian Army Reference Hospital, the CTRC was established in 2010 as a long-term response to the growing need for sustainably trained military healthcare professionals in Nigeria.
Operational since 2012, the Centre integrates advanced clinical service delivery, a modern training laboratory, and an expansive clinical training facility — built to drive excellence in HIV/AIDS care, clinical mentoring, and healthcare system strengthening across MODHIP-supported facilities nationwide.
CTRC Kaduna exists to elevate the quality of HIV/AIDS care and overall clinical service within the Nigerian military health system. We achieve this by:
Delivering high-quality HIV/AIDS treatment and management
Building technical capacity through targeted, practical training
Integrating patient-centered care into service delivery models
Supporting operational and clinical research to guide evidence-based interventions
Institutionalizing quality assurance and continuous improvement systems
Since inception, CTRC Kaduna has filled critical skill gaps by introducing specialized training and embedding research into clinical practice. Our key roles include:
1. Capacity Building Through Structured Training
Offering hands-on, modular HIV/AIDS training for clinicians, nurses, pharmacists, and healthcare support staff
Integrating real-world exposure to chronic care models often underrepresented in traditional medical curricula
Providing continuous mentorship by experienced disease experts within clinical environments
2. Advanced Clinical Care
Delivering direct HIV care aligned with PEPFAR protocols and MODHIP service standards
Supporting HIV/TB co-management, pediatric ART, and integrated chronic disease approaches
Enabling rapid referral, patient follow-up, and adherence counseling
3. Research & Innovation
Supporting and co-implementing operational research to improve clinical practices
Facilitating four major clinical studies focused on HIV service delivery outcomes and innovations
4. Mentorship & Quality Improvement
Running structured mentorship models for new healthcare workers
Driving internal quality assurance and data-driven improvements at MODHIP sites
The CTRC comprises:
A fully equipped training laboratory
Advanced classroom and digital learning environments
Live access to clinical care scenarios at the 44 Army Reference Hospital for real-time learning
This infrastructure enables delivery of both foundational and advanced courses in line with MODHIP’s national scale-up vision.
CTRC Kaduna operates within a collaborative ecosystem that includes:
MODHIP & Ministry of Defence Medical Services
Walter Reed Program Nigeria (WRP-N)
PEPFAR
Clinical partner institutions and Nigerian medical training academies
Through CTRC, MODHIP has trained hundreds of military and civilian health professionals, many of whom are now leading care delivery and service innovation at MODHIP-supported sites nationwide.
Its combined focus on practical clinical exposure, research-guided care, and institutional mentorship has made it a national model for sustainable health workforce development.
