On January 16, 2025, the Director General of the Ministry of Defence Health Implementation Programme (MODHIP), accompanied by key members of his leadership team, embarked on a strategic operational visit to the Military Hospital Lagos (MHL). This visit marked an important milestone in strengthening oversight, fostering collaboration, and driving sustainability across MODHIP-supported military health facilities.
Upon arrival at the hospital premises, the DG and his entourage were warmly received by the Site Team Leader (STL), who expressed his appreciation for the visit. The STL led the team to the hospital’s main conference room, where a formal briefing was held to provide the DG with a comprehensive update on the site’s operations, achievements, and challenges.
In his welcome address, the STL presented an overview of the facility’s strengths, including a dedicated workforce, improved patient flow, and notable progress in service delivery across the clinical spectrum. He also highlighted key areas requiring additional support, particularly around staffing gaps and infrastructure upgrades. His candid and data-driven presentation was both insightful and reflective of the site’s commitment to excellence.
The DG commended the STL and his team for their dedication and professionalism, emphasizing the vital role that MHL plays in MODHIP’s broader mission of delivering high-impact, military-aligned public health services. He noted that the success of the programme at the site level depends greatly on teamwork, communication, and consistent engagement with both the hospital commander and the larger healthcare team.
The DG further reiterated the importance of continuity in health service delivery, particularly as MODHIP gradually transitions certain responsibilities from the U.S. Walter Reed Army Institute of Research (WRAIR) to local leadership and public service structures. He assured the team that capable and qualified personnel who have demonstrated excellence would be considered for full integration into the Nigerian public health workforce to sustain the progress already made.
The DG’s visit also provided an opportunity for informal engagement with frontline healthcare workers at the site. Many shared their experiences and suggestions, which the DG received with appreciation. His presence and openness boosted morale among the staff and reaffirmed MODHIP’s commitment to inclusive leadership and staff development.
As the visit concluded, the DG encouraged the MHL team to continue upholding best practices, foster accountability, and deepen stakeholder collaboration. The tour underscored MODHIP’s vision for resilient military healthcare infrastructure and a sustainable future rooted in local ownership and innovation.
“We must strengthen the relationship between MODHIP site teams and commanders to ensure seamless and sustainable service delivery.”
